I really hated dealing with the solder roll as I was soldering - seemed it was always in the way and in danger of breaking something. My tip is to mount a towel bar at the end of the workbench. I load the towel bar (had to modify it a bit so that I could slide the solder rolls onto the bar) with rolls of solder. Now when I solder, I just unroll a length of solder while the spool is held safely out of the way on the towel bar.
